Our Story

For 50 years, Lywood has built more than electrical systems — we’ve built a reputation. What started in 1976 as a small electrical company founded by Bill Lyden and Chuck Woodward has grown into one of Delmarva’s leading electrical contractors, serving residential, commercial, industrial, and utility customers across the region.

After combining their last names to create Lywood, Bill and Chuck built the company on hard work, reliability, and strong relationships within the communities they served. After Chuck moved on to pursue other opportunities, Bill continued growing Lywood from the ground up, earning the trust of local farmers, homeowners, businesses, and contractors throughout Delmarva. Long before advertising and social media, Lywood’s name spread the way reputations are earned — through quality work, dependable service, and word of mouth.

In 1985, Lywood purchased its first property, a former Delmarva Power building located at 301 Bloomingdale Avenue in Federalsburg, Maryland. As the company continued to grow, so did its capabilities, workforce, and reach across the region.

For decades, Lywood built its reputation one project at a time by showing up, solving problems, and doing the job right the first time. From service calls and commercial projects to industrial facilities, utility work, wastewater plants, critical infrastructure, and emergency response situations, customers learned they could count on Lywood to handle difficult jobs with urgency, manpower, and experience.

In 2018, Lywood faced one of the most difficult moments in company history with the loss of founder Bill Lyden. Following his passing, Noah Lyden stepped forward to continue the legacy his father built while leading the company into a new era of growth and expansion.

Under Noah’s leadership, Lywood continued to evolve from a respected local contractor into a regional industry leader. In 2020, Lywood was honored as Business of the Year and expanded with the construction of its second and largest facility located at 102 Frank Adams Industrial Way in Federalsburg, Maryland.

As opportunities for growth continued, Lywood expanded again in 2022 with the acquisition of Bob Lawson Electrical Service, establishing a second operating location at 103 Division Street in Galena, Maryland. That same year, Lywood also acquired John W. Tieder Controls, significantly expanding the company’s automation capabilities and strengthening its position throughout the region. As the Automation Division rapidly grew, it officially became its own company in 2023 under the name Lywood Automation, LLC.

Today, Lywood employs more than 150 people across multiple locations throughout Delmarva. Our team supports residential, commercial, industrial, and utility customers with the manpower, experience, responsiveness, and capabilities needed to handle projects of every size and complexity. From planned projects and ongoing maintenance to emergency outages and critical infrastructure work, Lywood has built a reputation for being the company customers call when the job matters most.

While the company has grown tremendously over the last 50 years, the values it was built on remain unchanged. We believe strong relationships matter. We believe communication, reliability, and accountability are just as important as technical expertise.
